Why should I even care about getting a fire extinguisher?

So why should you even be reading this?
Imagine a scenario whereby you can be the most careful person. You always remember to switch off all electrical devices, never leave the stove on, keep flammables out of the bins, and so forth. Does that necessarily mean that your house is 100% safe from fire hazards?
The bad news is, no. Fire spreads both sideways and upwards. Your house always runs a risk of catching fire because of negligence. Not by you, but by your neighbor. If your neighbor forgot to switch off a stove or leave an electrical device overcharged, your house is in huge danger of a fire outbreak.
It always pays to be safe then pay when in danger.
Fire Classes
To start you off on your journey, we have to first understand what can possibly cause a fire outbreak at home. As you already know, there are many ways a fire can happen and they are all classified under different fire classes. While it is not important for you to memorize every fire class, you can take note that there are many different types of fire.
Fire Classes
A - Combustible Materials, such as wood, paper, rubber or cloth
B - Flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel or oil
C - Gases, usually from gas stoves
D - Flammable Metals
F - Cooking oil and fats such as vegetable or animal oils and cooking equipment

How to use a fire extinguisher
Now that I know about the different types of fire. What next?
Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher! There is no point having a fire extinguisher and not knowing how to use it right?

You have to check if you are using the right type of fire extinguisher (Good news! You do not have to do this step if your house has a Mighty Mist)

Check the gauge on the extinguisher to see if it’s fully charged and pressurized. If the needle is in the green, you’re good. If not, RUN! The fire extinguisher doesn't have enough pressure to put the fire out.

Stand around 1metre away from the fire before using the fire extinguisher. We do not want to get too close to the fire because it is hot and we want to stay safe. That’s why we are using a fire extinguisher and not a cloth to put out the fire.

Pull the pin.
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. (Hitting the tops of the flame with the extinguisher won’t be effective!)
Squeeze the trigger.
Sweep from side to side. (Sweep the nozzle from side to side until the fire is put out. Keep aiming at the base while you do so)

Slowly back away. Even if the fire appears to be extinguished, don’t turn your back on it. There might be unseen hot spots or hidden fires that can ignite into a large flame at any moment. It is better to be safe, you don’t want to waste so much effort putting out the fire and then letting it rekindle.
